Ann Strite-Kurz
BASK5: The Science of Embroidery
Ann Strite-Kurz The Science of Embroidery Book This "no frills" pamphlet was developed originally as the text for a notebook course that was taught for several years. The purpose was to provide a deeper understanding of the fundamentals of canvas embroidery and to create guidelines for handling some of the problems that are ignored in most basic books. As skills grow, most stitchers seek answers to puzzling issues such as logical ways to plan and manipulate stitch sequences, to achieve optimum canvas coverage and backing needs, or to select correct procedures for starting and ending thread tails. In her unique analytical style, Ann discusses the options available and provides clear-cut guidelines for choosing specific methods and solutions. It is important to learn not just the "whats" of good technique but also the "whys" in order to develop good consistency in one's needlework, and the tips for stitch refinement offered are useful for all types of counted thread embroidery.

A major segment of the essay is devoted to compensation dilemmas. Ann's approach considers more than just appropriate ways to handle specific situations; it stresses the prevention and/or elimination of awkward compensation with the use of proper planning and intelligent stitch choices. This manual not only helps the beginner sort out some of the basic rules and concepts, but it enables the more experienced stitcher to gain confidence as new challenges are explored.
