This
whimsical southwestern landscape was designed for the
ANG '90 Seminar in Santa Fe. The howling coyotes were
inspired by the paintings of Tavlos. They are each outlined
in Tent and then filled with open composite patterns
that all have trame' foundations in metallic. The kerchiefs
are added in ultrasuede as a "finishing touch."
The
mountains are also outlined in Tent and are silhouetted
against a brilliant airbrushed sky in delicious sunset
colors. The moon glows in gold kid, and the mountains
themselves are executed in original blackwork treatments
that combine two values of the same color to suggest
subtle shadings within the receding tiers.
Mail-ahead
packets will be sent a month ahead. Since a color choice
is offered, and each canvas is individually airbrushed,
the teacher requests at least 6 weeks notice on the
class enrollment and color choices to provide adequate
time for kit preparations. Threads and materials used
in the design include cotton floss and pearl cotton
in two weights along with both Kreinik and Coronet braided
metallics.
COLOR
CHOICE: Coral-teal or rose-turquoise. Kerchiefs
and airbrushed sky will match these thread choices.
PREWORK:
The mountains and coyotes must be outlined in Tent stitch
prior to class. Estimated time: 8-10 hours.
GOALS
OF THIS CLASS:
1. To share information on the use of an airbrush on
canvas for special effects.
2. To explore couching techniques and their use as layers
in composite patterns.
3. To study reversible blackwork technique with special
emphasis on shading with superimposed layers, using
two values as well as two compatible patterns together.
4. To introduce methods to use both kid and ultrasuede
applique' i.e. regular applique' (the moon with invisible
vs. visible stitches) and detached applique's (the kerchiefs)
are both used.
5. To provide ways to set up a canvas design without
using drawn outlines - Assisi style back stitch outlines
for the coyotes and a Tent outline for the mountains,
part of which are defined by the edge of the airbrush
stencil.
6. To discuss landscapes in general or how to achieve
perspective with both shading and proportion. Stylized
approach more feasible on a grid than converging lines.
TEACHER

HiLiter pens, a laying tool, stiletto or awl, embroidery
scissors, clamp or weight to secure frame to working
table, lamp and/or magnifier, if needed, along with
