Carole Lake CHL8: Celtic Fantasy |
![]() |
The Celts are defined as people who are native speakers of a Celtic language, such as Gaelic, Welsh, Irish or Breton (or their descendants). Although there are excavations of Celtic graves dating back to about 700 BC, the word Keltoi first appeared in Greek texts about 500 BC, referring to societies on the northern fringes of the world as they knew it. These early Celts did not have a written language, so the earliest evidence we have of them is through Greek and Roman hearsay. This piece is stitched on 18 count canvas in flowing counted stitches using a variety of threads. Celtic artwork is a largely abstract style of curving lines, which was a major element in decorated manuscripts, elaborate metalwork and sculptured stone. Celtic Fantasy is inspired by the cheekpiece of the Agris helmet, a gold-plated iron helmet decorated with coral inlay found in a cave in western France in the 1980's |
