The American Basket or Hana-kago was the first design students stitched when starting Japanese embroidery here in the United States. It covers many of the basic Japanese embroidery techniques. The instructions cover weft and horizontal foundations; cherry blossom petals, stamens and pollen; braided effect; Japanese knots; separated, diagonal, and vertical single layer; and lattice and diagonal holding. There are illustrations for the order to stitch the basket, the maple leaf, and the Chrysanthemum petals. The 14 pages of instructions are in color with large illustrations and easy-to-read text. Use the E-Z Angle template for the Chrysanthemums, the E-Z Cord template for the cord, the E-Z Rulers for measurements, and the E-Z Lattice template for the pine tree. Use the pencils to mark your fabric with the correct angles and the E-Z Template Holder to store your templates. |
| I wish I had Jennifer's instructions when I started Japanese embroidery in 1983. I would have spent more time concentrating on perfecting my stitching skills and less time taking copious notes. Maggie Crosby, Japanese embroidery student enrolled in the early United States classes |
