Marion Scoular Why Call it Blackwork? Book

Excerpt From Book

Indeed - Why Call it Blackwork? While traditional black on white is dramatic, the use of color in both fabric and stitches can be equally effective. Why not stitch white on black fabric? Blackwork can be simple or elaborate, as the embroiderer wishes.

There are no rules - only techniques, guidelines and appeal. It is my goal with this booklet to show you the artistic possibilities of this exciting embroidery.

Joan Edwards, a noted authority on the history of embroidery states: "Of all the methods of embroidery Blackwork is probably the most refined and distinguished. It is the embroiderer's art at one of its greatest moments when a nice balance has been struck between pattern and technique."
